As the month of November unfolded, the Xaverian delegation of the Philippines welcomed for the first time in this term, the new General Direction. Indeed, coming from a visit to Japan, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, the General and his councilor in charge of the Philippine circumscription, Fr. Eugenio Pulcini visited officially the Philippine delegation from November 9 to 24.
Scheduled few months ago, this visit actually occurred in a very timely manner to the delegation, in a moment when the theology community and the whole delegation were still under the shock and the grief of the sudden demise of Bro. Martin Mbende, sx. The visit thus started with a Eucharistic celebration with the African community based here in the Philippines, marking the end of the novena of the death of Bro. Martin. Through prayers and testimonies, they shared the grief and hope of the whole Xaverian family, bearing witness to Christ’s Gospel in times of joys as well as in anguishes.
Another important event which significantly marked the visit of the General Direction to the Philippines is the disaster caused by the Super-typhoon Yolanda which killed thousands of people while leaving behind thousands of families without shelters. In communion with Xaverian communities based here in Manila they shared compassion and assistance to the victims, while encouraging different signs of charity from other Xaverian circumscriptions as well.
The visit continued with several meetings with all Xaverian confreres working here in the Philippines, mainly in the four Xaverian communities of Project 8, St Francis Xavier Parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish of Marikina, and the Xaverian Theologate of the Philippines where they were based. This was indeed an occasion to visit different apostolic fields and the people working with Xaverian confreres here in the Philippines, without omitting a special visit to the Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila and Claret Philosophy School where Xaverian Students study theology and philosophy respectively.
The visit was crowned with the perpetual vows of Bro. Hery Mardadus Junianto (from Indonesia) presided by the General Superior, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo. On November 21, Fr. Luigi flew for the General house in Rome. He would be joined one week later by Fr. Eugene.
We wish here to thank all Xaverian Friends and the Filipino people for showing hospitality and a warmed welcome to the Fathers Luigi and Eugene.
